How Much Does Air Conditioning Cost in the UK?

This is one of the first questions people ask me when they’re thinking about air con. And to be honest, the prices you see online are usually either too vague or just not realistic. So here’s a straight answer based on what I actually see day to day.

The cost really comes down to how many rooms you want to cool and how straightforward the install is. A single bedroom is usually quite simple, but once you start adding multiple rooms, longer pipe runs or awkward layouts, the price moves quickly.

Typical air conditioning costs

  • Single room: usually around £1,800 – £3,000+
  • 2–3 rooms: roughly £3,000 – £6,000+
  • Larger / whole house setups: £6,000 – £12,000+

That’s for a proper install — not just the unit. This includes fitting, pipework, testing and making sure everything is set up properly.

My honest view

If something sounds cheap, it usually means something’s missing. Air con isn’t just “stick a unit on the wall” — the install is what makes it work properly.

What actually affects the price?

  • how many rooms you want covered
  • how big the rooms are
  • where the outdoor unit can go
  • how easy the pipework route is
  • whether extra electrics are needed

Sometimes two jobs that look similar on the surface can be completely different once you actually look at them properly.

Single unit vs multiple rooms

If you just want one room done, a single split system is usually the best and most cost-effective option. Bedrooms and home offices are the most common.

If you want multiple rooms, you’re looking at either multiple systems or a multi-split setup, which is more involved and costs more.

Can air conditioning heat as well?

Yes — this is something a lot of people don’t realise. Most modern systems will also heat the room, so you’re not just using it for a few hot days a year.

They work really well for things like offices, bedrooms and garden rooms where you want quick heating or cooling.

Running costs

Running costs are usually reasonable if the system is sized and set up properly. Fixed systems are much more efficient than portable units, which are what most people compare them to.

Like anything, it depends how you use it, but most people aren’t running them flat out all day.

Is it worth it?

For a lot of homes now, yes. Summers are getting warmer, and rooms like lofts or south-facing bedrooms can get uncomfortable pretty quickly.

It’s one of those things people often wish they’d done sooner once it’s in.

Final thoughts

A realistic starting point is around £1,800+ for a single room, and more depending on what you want to achieve.

The main thing is getting it done properly so it works well and looks neat, rather than just chasing the cheapest option.
